Now, i wish to, well not amend it, but augment it with stuff i have come to realize since posting it, via an exchange i had with a (digital) friend on Facebook. I realized that he and many people his age (50some or so) and younger think/believe that climate science is all about computer models. This is all they have experienced in this realm. Well, no. Climate science was being practiced well before the mass use of computers, indeed of the use of any computers with the capabilities of today’s machines. It is a science based upon thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and gas dynamics, with physics principles combined with mathematical concepts to derive some idea of the nature of the processes involved. These scientific fields of inquiry all involve principles which can be demonstrated via repeatable, falsifiable experiments that feature independent variables and controls; they go back hundreds of years. Virology never developed a method which adhered to the scientific method in these regards, a key difference.
Where computer models come in is only in matters of forecasting outcomes. Present day models are now what’s called “dynamic models.” They involve inputting global information regarding variables such as temperature and pressure as initial conditions, and then the models carry on calculations based upon the basic principles. But there is a huge fly in this ointment. Unless ALL the variables which could be involved are known, measurable and also understood as they interplay/feed back with each other, the predicted outcomes of weather models will tend to diverge from actual outcomes, highly likely after 10 days, could be possible even within 6 hours if certain factors don’t happen with the right timing.relative to one another (e.g.moisture feed arrives in time to meet a low pressure system) so as to cause the event forecast (e.g. a wet storm) to happen on the assumption of more or less perfect timing. This is why complex systems with lots of variables and feedback have such unpredictable outcomes.
Climate models are somewhat different, They rely upon general global conditions. They are more accurate in terms of generalized long term global outcomes than are weather models forecast for near term. the difference between predicting the outcome in a bathroom bowl after it is flushed 1 second later vs 5 minutes later, assuming it is functioning normally. But such models cannot, should not, be used to predict say the weather in New York 20 years from now. A bigger CO2 blanket in the atmosphere means a general trend for the global average temperature to increase.
The models in fact have understated the extent of the warming. Changes in the polar regions and to the world’s glaciers are happening in general much faster than the worst case scenarios global warming models were forecasting 20 years ago, 10 years ago, … … These changes are observable, one does not need models to perceive them. A big reason: in the interest of simplifying calculations, the models have not accounted adequately for numerous feedback mechanisms which can hasten the process (positive feedbacks) and ones which can slow it (negative feedbacks), The vast, vast majority of these feedback loops, as they are called, are positive. They have accelerated the process. One can read about these loops here, 68 loops are identified. Almost all are positive, and of those only 3 are reversible. By the way, you don’t have to like Guy McPherson or his perspectives about certain matters, i no longer can communicate with the man or wish to. The big problem is not the higher temperatures in themselves. It is the rate of the change in the average global temperature. This rate is many times higher than the rate seen in previous episodes of warming. This enormously accelerated time frame means there is no time for organisms to adopt, as in those previous episodes, no time for species to migrate. More and more life forms will simply die off. No time for negative feedback loops to be activated, ones which were turned on the past, making for a planet with remarkably stable temperatures over the long term. The forcing of warming gasses such as CO2 and methane will continue as long as the global industrial capitalist machine (whose most important product, on its terms, is capital accumulation) continues functioning. The effects of emissions do not fully manifest till several decades later, and most such emissions have taken place in the last couple of decades. Emissions could cease today without the warming stopping.
None of this should be taken to mean that i endorse the “green new deal” of the Great Reset/4IR/Agenda 2020/SDGs program. II would do ZERO about the problem of mounting climate chaos, and will in fact stress the planet even more with massive demands for energy and raw materials to create the “green technology” and maintain it.. The core of this chaos is rooted in the nature of the global capitalist industrial system itself, its imperative to grow exponentially no matter the effect upon the ecosystem or the world’s energy and materials supply. And that will not be remotely dealt with by the “green new deal.” It is nothing more than a scheme for a mechanism of greater social control, meant to herd us into the Blockchain global mind hive, meanwhile enriching further rich investors whose companies will get to vastly increase their sales of “green technology” to the world. Unfortunately, many climate activists fail to see this. And even many of those who do see this have been caught up in anticipating collapse, went along with Operation “Pandemic” because they saw in it a confirmation of their scenarios, a “deadly virus” resulting from the climate chaos, just like “Blowback” regarding 9/11, a promise of the elimination of “the human pestilence” as some of them have come to see matters.
Seriously contemplating moving to another planet. However, they all are at least as toxic or more so than earth. Maybe a nice little moon will do. If they can find all kinds of pollutants in the air, why not any of the billions of viruses they say are all around the planet?
